Question:

I got a little bit of pee in my mouth, is that okay?

I was going to the bathroom and, as all men know, your wiener sometimes gets out of control like a fire hose, and it flailed upwards and shot directly into my mouth. I am a little worried it could have been poisonous, am I safe?

Answer:

Most likely they are still in an operable state so long as the seal or pin is still in tact and the unit has never been used, even a little. Once any extinguihser is used, even a little bit, then it must be serviced or replaced. (Once the chemical enters the valve, it's only a matter of time before the pressure will leak out!) Most fire extinguishers are a mutipurpose dry chemical or ABC dry chem as they are rated for use on all 3 major classes of fire. The dry chemical is like a powder and over time it can cake up. It's good to invert the extinguisher and tap the bottom every once in a while to move the chemical around inside the unit. Being that they are 9 years old, they are actually overdue for what is known as a 6-year maintenance. During the 6-year, the unit is emptied, inspected on the inside, the valve assembly cleaned, replacing any damaged o-rings, and the unit is recharged. Of course, this is usually only done for commerical use and if your fire extinguisher head is plastic then for all intents and purposes it's disposable and those kind of units are generally not 6-yeared. Again, if it was commercial use, then it would actually have to have a tag showing that it's had an annual inspection and without the 6-year it would be illegal to tag it as okay. My recommendation would be to take them into a fire extinguisher shop and find out if it would be worthwhile to perfrom the 6-year. If not, then you can still keep them, but since the are getting older, I would at the very least consider buying at least one new one.
They should be checked on a regular service with date on the side. You can always speak to your local fire officer.
