Question:

I have a 97 BMW 328i with 176,000. When I make a fast right turn, the engine oil light lights up for 1 sec.?

The light disappears spontaneously after 1 seconds. The car drives ok afterwards. The oil level looks fine on dipstick, and I have one bar left on the auto oil change indicator. This has been happening for the last 2-3 weeks. I recently had a dead battery, which is lt;1 yr old, and thought it might be a bad alternator. Could this all be due to that? Thanks

Answer:

All cars have a sensor which detects oil pressure. That sensor is probably bad or the electrical connector could have become disconnected from it causing your ECM to give a false indication. Or the wire/s itself somewhere else could have been broken. So really there are 3 things that could cause your oil light to come on. Or worse your oil pump may be getting weak indicating its fixing to go bad or the oil pump pick up screen is clogged. But one clue to that is do you hear any tapping/ticking from within the engine? If you do then that would be an indication to the oil pump going bad or screen clogged up. Hope this helps.
THIS COULD BE ONE OF TWO THINGS,, WHEN YOU MAKE THE TURN THE OIL IS NOT BEING DRAWN BY THE PICKUP TUBE IN THE OIL PAN AND THE SENSOR SEES NO OIL PRESSURE,,, YOUR ENGINE OIL VISCOSITY COULD ALSO BE WRONG, CAUSING THE DROP IN OIL PRESSURE,, I WOULD TRY FIRST ADDING AN EXTRA QUART OF OIL AND TRYING THE FAST RIGHT TURN AND SEE IF THIS GOES AWAY,, EVEN IF IT LOOKS LIKE ITS ABOVE THE LINE ON THE STICK,,, ITS JUST ONE QUART AND WONT HURT ANYTHING,, IF THE LIGHT STILL COMES ON THEN WHEN U DO YOUR OIL CHANGE TRY A HEAVIER VISCOSITY OIL, LIKE A 10/40 INSTEAD OIF A 5/30 OIL,,, THE THICKER OIL MAY BRING THE OIL PRESSURE BACK UP TO NORMAL.FAR AS THE DEAD BATTERY,, U CAN HAVE THE ALTERNATOR TESTED AT AN AUTOZONE FOR FREE,, THEY WILL BRING A LIL MACHINE OUT AND RUN AN AMP TEST ON YOUR SYSTEM,, OR AN EASIER WAY IF U HAVE A VOLT METER IS TO PUT THE POSITIVE AND NEGATOIVE LEADS OF THE VOLTMATER ACROSS THE BATTERY,, TURN ALL ACCESORIES LIGHTS AIR ETC ON AND SEE IF U R RUNNIN 13.5 VOLTS OR BETTER,, IF SO ALT IS GOOD,,, YOU CAN ALSO LOAD TEST THE BATTERY TO DETERMINE ITS STRENGHTH,,,ART
It could be that when you turn, the oil moves away from the sensor for that second and the light comes on. Not sure but sounds like thats what might be happening
