Question:

I have a 98 chevy malibu and the theft system lights comes on and stalls my car for about 20 minutes, help.?

Light continues to flash and I can not start my car until it stops.

Answer:

they will do this sometimes if the key is getting worn out on it,that one should have a coded key for it,you may have to have a dealer make you another key for it,my fire bird was doing that ,and after having a key made it stopped doing it,look a the key real good ,and see if it has any bad places on it,good luck with it.
it sounds like an ign cyl issue, not a ign switch, do you have a aftermarket vehicle starter, if so get rid of it cause its wired into the factory system and they screw up. i have replace alot of ignition cylinders and have also removed alot of aftermarket car starters, start with removing the car starter if you have one, if not replace the ignition cylinder, 20 yrs at a gm dealer, glen
according to your proprietors handbook pg 2-18 Passlock Your automobile is provided with the Passlock robbery-deterrent equipment. Passlock is a passive robbery-deterrent equipment. Passlock helps gas if the ignition lock cylinder has not been tampered with. for the period of generic operation, the robbery equipment mild will come on for about 5 seconds while the key's grew to become to ON and the engine is began. If the robbery equipment mild flashes with the considerable in ON, wait 10 minutes until the mild is going off. Then turn the ignition key to OFF previously attempting to start up the engine.
You will have to get the code(s) checked in the PCM and BCM to see what has been caught and is acting up. Most of the problems associated with this car's theft system were related to a voltage drop inside the ignition switch. The only fix is to replace the ignition switch in the dash. If you have aftermarket alarms or auto start devices installed, that can also cause a ton of grief.
