Question:

i have a coolant leak near water pump, not sure where it is coming from?

it is a mazda b3000 pick up v6,it is coming from behind water pump, but it is not all the time, i would think that if pump is going it would be all the time, but it will go bone dry for a few dayswhen it does leak it leaves about an 8 inch spot on the driveway, temp gauge goes to its regular spot and does not move, any suggestions would be helpful, thanks

Answer:

water pumps can leak at different times, i had one that would not leak hot, while running, under pressure, but once it was completely cold it would start to drip, look for a small weep hole , there's a good chance this is wear it is leaking
Buy some coolant dye from a parts store and put it in the radiator....clean the area around the leak well, drive it for a few days and check with a blacklight...hardware stores carry the bulbs. Could be an intermittent pump or gasket leak.
Not sure where it is coming from? I will speak slowly, and use small words. Gasket leaking. Replace. Pump may be bad.
stop feeding the neiborhood cats antifreeze thats why there looking mangey look let the car warm up or top it off and come back you have to figure when it leaks dont check it when its hot have it replaced dont overlook the obvious dont work with out jack stands dont operate on just a jack and wear your safty glasses check the chilsons website use metric
water pump gasket or water pump
