Question:

Is there any way to make the wool I have work for a knitting pattern?

I have a lot of wool, and I'd really like to use it to knit some of the knitting patterns I haveHowever, every knitting book I look in for advice says to use the wool recommended in the patternIs there any way to make the wool I have work for the patterns I have? I'm willing to try increasing/decreasing stitchesAlso, none of the wool I have has any sort of label with it, it's just wool I've accumulated throughout the years (and I do mean years, I have that much of it!)If the wool I have won't work for knitting patterns, is there anything else I could do with it?

Answer:

Never heard of it before!!
From your experience chose needles that are the right size for the yarn you want to knitKnit a square and measure your tension (gauge)You can then knit a pattern that requires the same tension as your chosen yarnYarn manufacturers have patterns written to use their yarnThat is why they say only use the yarn recommended on the patternIt's because they want you to use their yarn.
