Question:

Why is my boiler constantly leaking?

I have an oil-fired, cast iron boiler and I believe the relief valve is what's leaking.. There is a small copper pipe that comes up from the top of the boiler and bends down the back.. at the end of the pipe it's open and water is dripping out constantly like a faucet. The PSI on the gauge is at 10! I turned the temp down to 150 degrees Farenheit and I have relieved the pressure numerous times over the last week in every level of my house. The water dripping out of the pipe in the back of the boiler is very hot and it's steamy and my basement is turning into a lil pond! Can someone tell me what's wrong???

Answer:

You might have sediment stuck in the valve that's not allowing it to seal properly, manually flush the valve a few times as this might wash it out. If that or replacing the valve doesn't fix the problem then have a professional look at it as the boiler may be building up too much pressure which is not safe.
vessel and prv needs changing no point cleaning prv it never works again and you might get away with just pumping up the vessel again.
If it is the relief valve, replace it.The pop-off pressure should be on the old valve. The spring on the old one probably is weak, and isn't keeping the valve seated.Lowe's or Home Depot should have a replacement. If not,try a plumbing company.
The seat in those safety valves gets hard, and once 'popped', won't reseat - replace it with another of the correct psi, but why did it pop? is your inlet pressure regulator bad, or has your expansion tank diaphragm breached? I once got into an argument with someone about how much water weighs, and how much column pressure I needed to make the autovent on the 3rd floor actually work to discharge air from my system, truth learned, I needed 24psi at the boiler to overcome the total weight of the water. The boiler core is rated to 50psi, so I replaced my TP with a 30 psi., solving the problem. LESSON? Even the licensed boiler guys can't prove they got an A+ on the test, and in the process of 'erring to the side of caution', create new headaches!
