Answer:

You can create a sort of fog with Carbon Dioxide, as used in Fire Extinguishers. Smoke detectors don't always rely on the atmosphere becoming opaque, a lot of them work on sensing certain chemicals, so CO2 might be OK. Can you have a dummy run first. Get the fire chief to accompany you, tell him what it's all about. That way you won't get into trouble.
I don't care for the premise at all. If there is a fire, you want to get out, simple as that. All this about a fire alarm, and who would pull it is secondary. Not every building has a manual pull, to set off an alarm. Many buildings are not even required to have a fire alarm system. If it is smokey would you both be searching for a fire alarm box you might have a hard time finding? Would you waste that time to do it? If on the way out of a building on fire would you stop, read directions, maybe play paper rock scissors to choose who gets to pull it like a game? Fires grow rapidly, and a clear area could be full of smoke in minutes. Most buildings that are equipped with an alarm, also have an automatic way of setting it off as well, by detectors or sprinkler system. It's perfectly fine to pull the alarm in the event of a fire, but only by doing so safely and on the way out. Just pull it, don't make a game of it.
