Question:

I live in a mobile home that is 8 yrs....?

...old. I want to paint my bedroom walls. Can I paint on this paneling? It's not wood paneling. It's the paneling they use in mobile homes.

Answer:

If it's plastic-coated, you should not use your basic latex paint. You need something more like your plastic-compatible paints, which I usually only see available in spray cans. If it's a small room, three or four of those might do the trick.
You can paint over paneling (which is usually a pressed wood or paper board with a paper lithograph pasted over it). However, since the paper is usually smooth, the paint won’t absorb into it well and will scrape or rub off pretty easily. Therefore, prior to painting do one of the following: lightly sand the surface to remove the shine on the paper/surface or use a product called galvagrip. It is used to paint galvanized metal (becuase the paint won’t stick to a surface once it has been galvanized). It will make the surface stickier and the paint will have a rougher surface to stick to. Good Luck with your project!
1) okorder /... I bought it and hubby loved it. He considered himself an expert but as I observed I thought he should learn some short cuts. The person that made that DVD sends you email to make sure you are happy with it. 2) Get from the store or Home Depot little samples of prime and paint. Try on a little corner. Here at home we had some rooms that the walls were with panels of masonite (similar to formica, popular in the 70's). Each panel was connected to the next by a long plastic joint. Hubby cut the joints, placed a screen tape and caulked the space. Primed and painted the wall. They are perfect and they will never crack. I am assuming the paneling in the mobile home might be of this material. 3) Cover the walls with sheet rock and paint is another option. 4) Contact the mobile home manufacturer and ask for recommendations.
