Escape is ALWAYS your best option for survival. Your best bet is to rehearse what to do in case of a fire before hand. Think about what your most direct route of escape is, then think about what you would do if that route was blocked. Is there a window you could escape through? If the window is too high, maybe an escape ladder purchase is warranted. If escape is impossible, move to a room with a window and close the door. Stuff clothing, towels or blankets under the door and try to signal for help from the window. You and your family should develop and discuss a fire safety plan for your home. Designate a safe place to meet outside. We have fire drills and schools, churches, and places of businesses, but often fail to even talk about what we would do in our own homes. If you come up with an escape plan in advance, practice it, you'll be much better off in the event of a fire. It's also important to make sure your home is equipped with smoke alarms.
