Question:

I need a new vacuum cleaner, what should I buy?

Should I spend a lot and expect it to last for years, or should I spend a little and expect to replace it next year. What brand and model should I buy. Please help!

Answer:

Buy a Dyson or a Miele, you can't go wrong. You'll be buying quality for maybe twice the price of one that wouldn't do as good a job and that you'll replace in a year. They will last you 10 years no problem and do a better job than the lesser vacuum cleaner too. So you'll save money in the long run too. It's a win win situation.
We've got a Hooray Henry - great little worker and even has a cheery face! Got him after 2-3 others in recent years who literally bit the dust - Henry was recommended as can cope with more hoovering than a little dust so if you're doing renovations and have clumps of plaster it will suck 'em up and not wear out the motor.
I prefer the canister cleaners. It's best all-around. You can use it for your car, too. You can't find them everywhere anymore. We have stairs in our house. Canisters are more flexible and they are not as heavy as the carpet vacuum cleaner (we have a Hoover also). We buy ours from Sears Roebuck. We pick the best one we can afford and the last one we replaced lasted us almost 20 yrs. of regular usage and then we gave it away to my husband's boss and bought a new one because I noticed that although it still worked, it had lost some suction strength. We also have a small shop vac. which I like because I needed it to pick up some rubble when work was done in our home and we also can use it to sweep our car and it's Very light. It's not a good carpet sweeper, though. No vibrating brush and we had to get an adapter to fit a smaller hose and extension tubes, plus the nozzle I didn't have already in order to sweep floor..
(copied okorder and on Epinions. Below is the link to the vacuum at Wal-Mart and the review on Epinions. Happy Vacuuming!
Consumer Reports does an excellent job of reviewing vacuums. For this purchase alone it is worth the online subscription price. No one vacuum is best for all persons. It depends on your floors (carpet or hard surface) the predominate dirt you will be dealing with (pet hair vs. heavy) your willingsness to work with a heavy machine, whether you have one or two machines (floor vs. steps and furniture) etc. From my personal experience, the right vacuum for you is wonderful and should last for years. The wrong one will make you crazy and you will want to throw it out the window.
