Hi yes of course some mess with motorcycles it happens usually out of jealousy. having been the subject of such jealousy this fact came to light some years later when it was found to be a so called friend. so the problem you have is that as you are not mechanically aware enough anything could be done. so time to to be more educated about how your machine works.
Lots of ways. It only takes a nasty mind and a bit of knowledge, so I'm not going to list the many ways on here. Every day pre-ride checks should have discovered traces of most of them, though, and If I found my bike with the cover half off I've have gone over it with a fine tooth comb before riding it. Many places, interfering with a vehicle is criminal. So if you see who dunnit, let the police have the footage.
An easy way to quickly mess up a bike would be to drop it HARD or just start stomping on the chain/step on it with your full weight repeatedly. If you're lucky enough to catch the scumbag that touched your bikes you could file a police report and charge them for damage of personal property.
