Question:

i need to change the water pump in my car?

i have a 1996 infiniti i30t and its leaking from underneath the car so i took it in to get it diagnosed and they said i need a new water pump and they are trying to charge me 500 dollers and if i need a new timing belt i have to pay a 1000 dollers. is there a cheaper way i can fix my car. it started to over heat today and this sucks cause its my only car my parents wont buy me a new car so im stuck with this stupid old car and i have to pay for it they wont help me. can someone help me?

Answer:

The V-6, has timing chains, not a belt. The labor guide shows 3.6 hours to replace the water pump. The retail price on an aftermarket water pump (not genuine Infiniti) is about $60. So the shop's quote of $500 is about right. The only way to save money on this repair is to find a shop with a lower hourly rate. If you've been taking care of the car and changing the oil, you should not need to replace the timing chains. However, it the shop finds that the chains need to be replaced along with the pump, the total bill should be $1,000, not $1,000 plus $500. If they replace the chains, the labor for the pump replacement is already done. Don't pay twice for it.
You need more estimates - those prices are way (!!!!!) overpriced; keep a gallon jug of water with you at all times and check the radiator fluid level when the engine is cold [NEVER when hot] and get 3 - 5 estimates from different garages
an air bubble and its probable a stable theory to alter the thermostat once you regulate a water pump u would desire to alter the thermostat just to be risk-free that and it in all risk hasent been replaced for a protracted time so chang it i artwork in a keep. yet you're your guy or woman individual so do what you think of you will desire to ok
Go to Autozone and buy a repair manual for it. In that repair manual, it will tell you how to replace the water pump. All you need to do is buy the parts and tools that are needed for that. The manual should tell you what tools you need also.
I don't know how hard it is to change the water pump on this car, but do know some are real hard. I believe you are a female by your other question and because of that they are trying to blow you smoke. $500 to change the water pump is very high and another $500 for a timing belt is just to much. To replace the timing belt at that point most of the hard work is already finished, Take it someplace for an estimate. Better yet have a male, Dad, Uncle, BF take it in. This is no excuse, but a lot of places will charge a female 25 to 50% more and that not right. By the way, if you get the job done for a lot more reasonable price... guess whose nose would get the bill shoved under and I'd probably tell them what a jerk they are and every one else, just cost them as much business as possible.
