Question:

I pretty much need help on this math problem!10 Points?

1.The city of Centerville plans to dig a rectangular landfill. The landfill will have a base with dimensions 700ft by 200ft and a depth of 85ft.A)how many cubic feet of garbage will the landfill hold?C)what info do you need to determine how long the landfill can be used until it is full?D) Centerville hires an excavator to dig the hole for the landfill. How many cubic yards of dirt will he have to haul away?

Answer:

volume = 700*200*85 the rate of which the landfill is filled same amount as the volume 1 cu yd = 27 cu ft.
a) 700ft x 200ft x 85ft = 11,900,000 cubic feet c) The volume of garbage deposited in a fixed period of time. d) Covert feet to yards, 3 ft = 1 yd 700 ft = 233.33 yds 200 ft = 66.67 yds 85 ft = 28.33 yds 233.33 x 66.67 x 28.33 = 1,322,222 cubic yards
1) l x b x h = 11900000 ft^3 2) You would need to know the volume of rubbish and the volume of the landfill site, (answer to 1)) 3) well obviously he will move 11900000 ft ^3 but im not sure what this is in yards... i'd think they were roughly the same.
I don't think the capacity of the landfill is as simple as the calculation of (700 x 200 x 85) cu ft. / (27 cu ft/ cu yd.) giving you a cubic yard volume. That calculation will only give you the volume of the hole. However landfill operation standards require daily cover of layers (lifts) of dirt - or other material as specified in the landfill permit. Therefore, the capacity for garbage will be less than the calculated volume of space excavated. Also, when garbage is placed in a landfill, it is compacted. How long a landfill will operate depends on daily loading. When the landfill is full, a final cover must be placed on it and maintained.
A) 700X200X85 B) rate of collection...? C) convert ft into yards, ex. 700 ft = 233.33 yds
