I have used this new type of screen with success. It's a sturdy pet resistant window screen made of vinyl coated polyester. It's not abrasive, it's strong with a soft feel. I put it over my intake valves with plastic clamps so my frogs wouldn't get their arms or legs sucked in. It works really well. I had some left over from when I replaced my screen, you can pick it up at any hardware store.
I would try to stay away from using any type of metal in the tank. Ive had this problem before and what I did was increase the diameter of the pump intake in the sump to decrease the suction pressure (increasing the diameter of the pipe while keeping the pressure the same will decrease the overall pressure). Then I went to the hardware store, Menards to be exact, and bought plastic strainers used in gutter systems. They come in different diameters, are round, and you'll have to play around with them a bit to find the right fittings, but they will fit into regular pvc.
