Question:

Ideas on painting cement block?

Half of the walls in the house we are remodeling are made of cement block. I've never painted walls like that before? I do know it soaks up the paint... so I need some suggestions on making it last and not peel off? Also, if you could give me some ideas for the floor also.... It's made out of cement and we can't really afford hardwood through the entire house.

Answer:

For your walls, first use one or two coats of a good quality primer followed by one or two finish coats. The best paint for the floor is an Epoxy paint. Your home store can recommend something for your specific conditions.
First use a cement sealing product like Dry-Lock. Then put on some paint sealer (i.e. Bulls-Eye), then paint. The cement floor is a little trickier. You can get cement stains which is better than trying to paint it. They do make an epoxy cement paint used in garages, but the preparation of the cement prior to applying the paint makes it a lot of work. Stick with a cement stain.
