Question:

If I have a pair of pants that have directions to wash only by hand,...?

what specifically will happen if i try to machine wash them? I can never get washing by hand to work correctly, so I'm trying to see if machine washing is a viable alternative.

Answer:

Most washing machines have a delicate or woollens cycle. Turn inside out and use one of these cycles with cold water and woolwash not normal washing detergent. If there are any stains rub them gently with a very diluted solution of dishwashing detergent, leave for half an hour, then wash. Dry inside out in the sahde or early mroning, late afternoon sun.
They maybe able to machine wash it really depends on the fabric. You could use a cycle that is used for woolens (gentle cycyle). But hand washing is not difficult. Just place a small amount of detergent into the wash basin and fill with luke warm water. let it soak for 2 minutes then gently squeeze water thru it. Squeeze out excess water and place into clean rinse water. I always gently spin out excess water, so it will dry quickly.
You can set the washer to gentle or extra gentle/ hand wash if you have that cycle.
Most of the time is is safe to wash them on gentle cycle, just don't put them in the dryer.
Use cold water and the gentlest cycle your machine has. (Mine actually has a hand wash cycle.) Don't dry them in the dryer, hang them to dry which will take up to 24 hours depending on the warmth of your home and the dryness of it.
