Question:

If I put my laptop into hibernation mode, is it okay to disconnect the power cable?

When I put the laptop into hibernation, the power pack still makes a considerable amount of noise. Since the memory was saved to the hard drive, is it okay to disconnect the power cable? Please note that the battery on the computer is pretty much dead and lasts for about 2 mins tops on normal mode

Answer:

In hibernation the PC will still use a small amount of power, meaning it will still run out. Save your work and shut it down if you want it to unplug it.
Yes, but after a long while it will die!
If it's true hybernation (and not hybrid sleep [?] or suspend) then everything is on the hard drive and the machine is completely powered down. You can safely remove the power cable - and even the laptop battery (if you wanted to, just to prove it works) - and a hour/day/week later pop those back in and when you power back up you should be good to go. EDIT: If it's true hibernation you can leave it like that for years. (Just do a simple test without power cord or battery as mentioned here and see if it works before trusting it.)
Yes, the battery wont eventually run out as other people have stated. Hibernation is similar to standby (low power mode that saves what you have running for resume) except it doesnt go into a low power mode. Hibernation saves to your hard drive and then the computer uses no power. Basically, YES you can unplug it and it will stay like that until you start it up again.
Once you Hibernate your processor and all internal devices are turned off. So its perfectly alright to remove the power cable and actually that’s why it is designed for. What happens when you hibernate is that all your current data are preserved in your hard-disk (that doesn't need power to hold data) and the computer is turned off. When you on the computer, the operating system will load the saved data giving you the exactly same condition as you had before hibernation. The only difference is that the clock has changed :D About the battery wearing-off issue, batteries always discharge and its a unstoppable effect. Thats normal and it is not because of Hibernation. You can just pull down the screen and the laptop is by default ment to sleep. When you sleep a computer data is not preserved in the hard disk and the system is not completely turned off. Here it runs under extremely low power consumption. Its much faster than waking up from a Hybranate. Time to get running: Startup Hibernate Sleep What’s good? It depends on the time. If you just need to stop work for a while uses the sleep function. Else use the hibernate function. If you install new application or some thing like that - restart the computer.
