Question:

Im planning to buy a black leather sofa any pros, cons? Any advise?

How do you keep it clean and is it necessary to use leather conditioner all the time?

Answer:

I've had my leather sofas for about 5 years and they still look great. I think I've conditioned them once, but should probably do it more often. I can't really think of any cons to buying this.
We have a black leather sofa. It was my husbands idea. Every 3 months you have to clean and condition it. It really is no big deal. Most of all keep it away from the heat registers. Do not buy the stupid insurance that is suppose to protect you against tears, rips etc etc. It is a rip off.
Leather is great and wears well especially if you have kids. Kids get fabric really dirty, tear it and then what do you have left? At least with Leather, the older it gets, the better it looks. Most stuff cleans off of it pretty easy. Grease is a little more difficult, but you can use leather conditioner and it does a good enough job! Just buy good leather, not cheap. You will not be sorry.
We have a black leather sofa and love seat and love it. If you have kids and/or pets it is the most durable thing you can buy. Also, you are better off buying a less expensive grade of leather as it is a little thicker and less prone to any punctures or scratches than the more expensive, thinner and softer grades. We use leather conditioner about twice a year (more often if we think about it or have time). The rest of the time you can just wipe any spills with damp cloth.
Make sure the sofa is made of Top Grain Leather for durability. Bonded leather should be avoided. Analine leather is softer but has almost no stain resistance. Don't let them sell you expensive leather conditioner which is basically lanolin. You can buy moisturized at the local dollar store which works just as well. I use it on the leather seat od a BMW and it's great. Only clean the sofa if it's dirty. Just use a slightly damp cloth and dry the leather immediately. If you have small kids or pets, some stores offer a warranty - it may be worthwhile to consider it - although I generally stay away from them.
