Question:

In a home, why can't electrical wiring be in contact with a gas pipe?

I had a home inspection and the inspector pointed out a couple of instances where electrical wiring is in contact with some gas pipes and should be corrected. Why is this a problem?

Answer:

I imagine its because a stray spark from the electrical wiring could very easily set off a gas explosion.
Gas and electricity make a big boom when they mix. Wire and pipes move a little bit all the time this causes the pipe to wear through the insulation when that happens it go boom.
This is a problem because if the electrical wire somehow creates a spark the gas line could explode
The wire should not be against any metal metal surface because if the insulation on the wiring gets damaged where it's rubbing it will electrify the the pipe causing a shock hazard. The gas line is hooked to the water heater which is connected to the water lines and if you don't have the proper grounding in your system you could get electrocuted in the shower or washing dishes or watering the yard. It's an NEC code to protect your life!
