Question:

In metamorphic rocks, do rare metals effuse into quartz and feldspar and produce interesting colors?

If so, do these minerals have names?

Answer:

Cutting laser! That was a funny answer. Seriously though, a file has a hardness of around 6.5, still not good enough to shape quartz. What you need is a grinding wheel or diamond point drill bits. Most people use a grinding wheel with a water coolant to shape stones to make jewelry. If you are interested in carving a shape the diamond drill bits with a flexible shaft (like a Foredom -trade name) is what you need. Check with local rock shops or rockhounding clubs to get some idea of what is available in your area. Some areas will rent the equipment you need.
I have no experience in this area but the first thing that comes to my mind is a cutting laser.
This Site Might Help You. RE: How to grind or shape quartz? I have a bit of quartz I'd love to shape into my own item. However, the hardness of quartz is (on the MOHS scale) a hardness of 7. Since a steel file is (I think) 5, what is a more preferable method?
How To Shape Quartz
I dermel and stones that are wet and diamond cutting saws for it.
