In the mid 80's I heard of some farmers in the midwest who mixed chicken poop and sawdust in their silos,?

The chicken poop would ferment and the nitrogen in it would convert to protein. The sawdust was the fiber needed to go along with the protein and they fed it to beef cattle.I have been away from the midwest and now live in the mideast (China). Is the practice stil going on?
