Question:

Installing fan with dimmable lights. Only black and white cables. . .?

I want to install a fan with dimmable lights. I don't mind a standard wall switch (on-off). What I want is to have a remote control so I can control the lights separate from the fan. The ceiling box only has black and white cables. Will it be possible to have this done or do I have to run a red wire down to the switch? Thank you.

Answer:

If you use a remote control then all you need are the black and white wires in the ceiling box. Most fan and home stores sell the remotes. They have a unit that mounts in the fan canopy with an input which connects to the wires in the ceiling box and has separate output wires for the fan and the light fixture. The local unit which you can lay on a table or hang in a bracket on the wall communicates with the fan mounted unit to control the fan speeds and the brightness and on/off features of the light.
Yes but you would have to buy a remote controlled fan to do the dimming of lights and have separate fan control
You don't have wiring in the wall for a separate dimmer control. You can buy a dimmer unit with a wireless remote.
