Question:

Installing threadless bike forks/headsets?

So, my current fork's tube length is about 8quot;, I'm getting a new fork around 9.5quot;once installed people sometimes have these little rings to put onto the tube till your handle bars are high enough so its not 100% concealed on the tube just like 5MM aboveIs that necessary to have those spacer things?

Answer:

Spacers are used to raise the stem up until the bars are at your preferred heightAny steer tube that protrudes above the stem once the bars are high enough is cut off about 1/2 the height of one spacer above the stem, a star fangled nut is installed in the steer tube, one spacer is installed above the stem, and the top cap is installed to hold the stem in placeIf the steer tube is aluminum or steel, a tubing cutter can be used to cut the steer tubeIf the steer tube is carbon, a hack saw can be used with a cutting guide.
