Question:

Insulation with vapor barrier (paper) installed incorrectly in attic, what should I do?

My cousin and I recently installed Batt insulation (R-30) in my atticI found out that the vapor barrier (paper side) of the insulation should be facing down to the living area, in other words not visibleSo, would this really cause mold problems in my attic and lose the effectiveness of the insulation? Is it worth us going up there and spending another day trying to fix it or should I just rip off the paper? It was installed in half the attic since the insulation that was there somehow vanished, I think the animals that were there (squirrels and others) probably took it somewhere else, so no existing insulation was there in that half of the atticThanks in advance!

Answer:

The other answers here are understating the potential issue with your installationDepending upon the climate and the type of heat you are using you could end up with moisture in the fiberglass being trapped because it cannot escape to the attic as it shouldMoisture trapped in the fiberglass has two issues: first it can significantly reduce the r-value of the insulation, secondly it can cause a build-up of moisture to lay on the back side of your drywall causing discoloration of the ceiling, rusting of the drywall screws or nails, and wicking into the plasterOver time this can cause a big potential messFlipping the batts over is the best action but, at the very least, you should remove the paper from the back of the batts.
Don't forget toilet paper, and raincoatsYou never know when it's going to rain! At least you're only 15 minutes away from the barn, so at least if you forget something, you can always ride down and get itAlso, burning plastic sets off dangerous fumes, and it stinksdon't burn any plastic, only burn paperI think that your should just take your leftovers homeThe idea of leftovers in a river where people might swim grosses me outIf you're only going for one night, there shouldn't be too many leftoversthat's all i can think of right nowHave fun!
