Question:

is aluminium more ductile and malleable than copper?

is aluminium more ductile and malleable than copper?

Answer:

Dear X, This is not an easy question. Pure Copper is soft, malleable and ductile. As it is worked and forced to change shape it Work Hardens and will break or crack unless it is heated to anneal it. Copper with oxygen impurity is also hard and does not conduct electricity well. Pure Aluminium is soft, malleable and ductile. It is alloyed with other metals to make it useful(Cu, Mg, Li). Certain alloys Age Harden so you can build an aircraft from soft aluminium and then it hardens and becomes strong. If the Al sheets are in store too long they harden and become brittle and must be sent back to the factory to be re-softened before they can be used. I hope this is useful:Rufus
