Question:

Is black plastic sheeting ok for ponds?

I want to make a pond for my turtles but I don't want to spend to much money on regular pond liner so I'm thinking about using black plastic sheeting instead. Is it good or bad? Is it too thin?

Answer:

Go with 20 mil. The thicker, the better. You won't save any money if you have to replace a thinner liner. And certainly there's more labor in replacing the liner if you have to do it again and again and again. A single 20 mil liner is stronger than 3 or 4 thinner liners.
Keep sunlight off the plastic. It isn't UV resistant. Line the bottom of the pond with sand or something. If the bottom slopes and the sand keeps running down the slope, then cut up burlap bags and cover it with the material.
it worked good for me here in florida till the wading birds walked in and poked holes in the plastic with their toenails ..then i made the walls strait up and down and put sand on the bottom that solved that problem
good buy 6 mil its thicker
