Question:

Is copper magnetic and can steel be used as an electromagnet?

Is copper attracted to magnets.Cause i have a copper 1 cent coin and copper wire and they were not attracted. Also since steel wire is attracted, can it be used for electricity and as and electromagnet?

Answer:

The regular steel cents of 1943 are quite common. Each mint produced over 100 million. Copper cents of 1943 are extremely rare, worth $thousands even in heavily circulated condition. Test 1 - Steel cents are magnetic. Copper cents are not. Test 2 - There are many cases where 1948 cents have had the last digit altered to try to fake a 1943 copper cent. Check the last digit carefully against the 3 on a real cent. Test 3 - If you really believe that you have a genuine copper 1943 cent, have it authenticated by PCGS or NGC, the two leading services for coin grading.
The only metals that are magnetic or can be magnetized or used for electromagnets are ferrous metals... thats all you get; Now, do your own homework. Its not our job to think for you.
Copper is not attracted to a magnet. Steel, iron, cobalt, and nickel are the only magnetic metals. The metal used in an electromagnet does not have to be a magnet material. copper is the best for this application. PS, a US penny is mostly zinc with a little bit of copper plating. .
Copper Electromagnet
Cause i have a copper 1 cent coin and copper wire and they were not attracted. You kind of answered your own question. No copper isn't magnetic. Also since steel wire is attracted Yes steel is magnetic. can it be used for electricity and as and electromagnet? Steel is a metal and it can conduct electricity, however copper is a better conductor. Steel can be used in the core of an electromagnet. Just wrap copper wire around a steel core and it makes the magnet stronger.
