Question:

Is drinking liquid from a melted plastic cup safe?

I poured hot water into a plastic cup not really intended for hot liquid. I am worried that the plastic melted into the liquid and I will drink it and get sick. it that possible? or do drinking cups not really have any toxic materials?thanks.

Answer:

It is possible that some of the plastic actually melted into the drink. However, the chance that you will get sick is almost non existent. Plastic is called be chemists - polymer. a polymer is a very long molecule of atoms. Polystyrene for example (foam cups for hot drinks) is made of styrene. Today styrene is considered to be carcinogenic, and therefore not recommended for hot drinks. In general, I wouldn't recommend using plastic cups, spoons, kettles or anything made of plastic to be used with hot food.
Plastic is not considered good for health. My institute has banned any form of plastic bags inside the campus. Even when we have to get grocery, we have to use paper bags. so u can see plastic in any case is not good. now when u say.. the plastic cup is not meant for holding hot liquids> why u want to do it ? and then if it is getting mixed.. then better don't drink the water. as it will harm u.
