Question:

Is it always best to have the dealer install a car alarm?

I just bought a new 2009 TSX. I really need to put in an alarm and starter and I really dont know where to go to. The dealer said that Acura is the only place to get it installed. anyone else might mess it up and then void the factory warranty. But the price he gave me was ridiculous (1200). Theres this alarm place in town that I've been going to for years and they would probably charge me half of that price. The dealer said that only Acura trained installers should touch my car its way too advanced for other installers and cutting the wrong wires would be way too easy. Ifeel that he may have a point but also that he is trying to rip me off. Help me out guys!!!

Answer:

no there are other shops that specialize in doing that like stereo installation shops they do this all the time just make sure that ever who installs it goes over all the options the alarm system has on it with you when their done other wise you may not know how to make it work properly, its real important they tell you all the features they have hooked up on it,and how the work, good luck.
No, I would take it to a alarm specialty shop. But really, why do you need an alarm? I hear them going off all of the time and don't pay any attention to them and don't know anyone who does. I don't know of anyone who have prevented a theft because of an alarm. If I really needed one I would want an active alarm that can track the car and disable it. Can the dealer installed system do that? If not I would surely find a place that could.
It's no secret that dealers want your business. But the best point of all was brought up when it was said that it could void the warranty. That is true. Key word is that it could void the warranty. Ask this installer if the system you want put in involves any actual cutting of wires. Many alarm systems should be designed to simply clip in between wiring harnesses w/o doing any damage or harm. Yes cars are very complicated Acura's are no better or worse than any other new car. But this installer you like should have some knowledge about Acura. If he doesn't, you might rethink this guy.
