Question:

Is it dangerous to boil plastics?

Would it be dangerous to boil a piece of plastic? (Specifically, the plastic used in the round things that cover a set of blank cd's)I'm going to use the plastic in a mold. If it is dangerous, what durable household plastic or material could I use to put in a mold?

Answer:

First of all its toxic. Second of all, I doubt you'll get a mold. The plastic will just burn, it wont change into a mold. I suggest buying some other product that could be useful for whatever it is your doing
plastic releases poisonous gases when burned
I dont think you are going to get the results you would like ... you are better off going to a hobby store and getting a product designed for what you are trying to do. Also ... yes ... it is dangerous. Plastics release many gases that are poison when burned
yes it is just do it out side and on a double boiler so that you dont burn the plastic that is the safest way to do it
Plastics do release gases that are not good to breath when heated. Reheating plastics that have bee molded into a particular shape does not always work either. In heating the plastics get side chain connections. Reheating gets weird shapes. I boiled old toothbrushes to sterilize them for a lab project where we had made toothpaste. They came out twisted.
