Question:

Is it difficult to lay ceramic tile? Can you use the same tile on the walls that are on the floor?

I'm laying ceramic tile in my bathroom which I've never done. Any suggestions? I was also just thinking that it'd be neat to put the same tile as a shower surround. Would that be difficult? What do I need to do for that?

Answer:

It is not too hard. Corners and cuts can be difficult without a tile saw. Prep is most important. Laying the underlayment, and getting the right consistency for the grout. Wiping the grout with too much water will make it crumble within a years time. You can treat the wall the same way. Just be sure and seal the grout and tile once it is done.
Yes you can put the same tiles on the wall as on the floor. Just be careful about the size of the tiles (speaking of ceramic tiles) for the wall. The bigger and heavier the tiles for the wall the more craftsman ship is needed to keep them adhered or from slipping until dry. You need the same thing for the wall as you are using on the floor. A tub of Mastic, a notched trowel, tape measure and a tile cutter and grout joint spacers. After tile is set, let dry for at least 24 hours. Then you'll need grout, a bucket , grout sponge, a rubber float (or grout float). And grout sealer.
I would recommend getting a professional tile setter to do the job but I will give you all the help I can if you want to DIY. In the shower you should use tiles that are on a mesh. Reason being a shower in not level. The edges are higher than the drain area so the water can go down the drain. You will need a wet saw, and certain tools to do a tile job. This web site has tools, Side bar with how to etc information, a DIY section that has a how to video, and other free informative information. Hope this helps you, good luck.
Hi, okorder for more detail on installing and cutting your tile.
You don t say what kind of tile your laying. is it self stacking? you need a space? Get the right kind for the tile you have? Using the right kind of trowel for tile? There s to many questions to try and answer them all here, but you basic question was can you do the same tile on the walls? Yes you can w/ planning and if the tile has a trim pc to finish off the sides and top. You need to figure what kind of trim is available for that tile. If it s just a flat trim then you need to take out the dry wall and add cement board in it s place the same height as the tile. Or just a bit below as to cover over the edge of the drywall. Soap dishes and or corner shelves are very handy but can be a challenge for 1st timers.. GL
