Question:

Is it safe to use a 75 watt bulb on a 60 watt lamp?

(Warning: I have no knowledge of electrical equipment) I just bought a black light. It can fit into my lamp, but I noticed that the lamp had a label that read To reduce risk of fire, use a 60 watt type a lamp max. The bulb is 75 watts. Is it okay to use the bulb or should I not use it?

Answer:

Please do not use the 75 watt bulb in that lamp. The warning is on the lamp not to go over 60 watts on it because it will overheat and there is the high possibility of it catching fire and setting the house on fire. Always pay close attention to the warning limits on electrical things. Take the bulb back tomorrow and get your money back. You are smart to be concerned about the warning. You might have just saved yourself from having a fire.
As they say in third world countries, no bueno. Dont jerry rig stuff and you wont burn down your pueblo.
Please follow the directions on your lamp. The 75 Watt bulb will throw out more heat and need more power and your lamp is not rated for that. This could result in a fire. It is not worth the risk. Don't fool around with electricity.
Don't use it. The bulb will get too hot for the lamp. The lamp must be rated the same or higher than the bulb.
I'm only answering in hopes that others can answer my confusion Isn't it the other way around that is dangerous? eg. 75 watts into a 60W light bulb vs. Only supplying 60watts to a 75 watt bulb Unless the power coming out at light bulb sockets is unregulated eg. 120V 60A or outlet output When a bulb is plugged in it draws that amount of energy
