Question:

Is it sensible to let my 6 month pup chew on an old rug ?

He has wrecked most of his toys but loves to chew my old living room rug . Please answer x

Answer:

He does not know the difference between your old rug and your posh carpets. If you allow him to chew an old rug, he will chew your carpets. Instead give him raw carrots to chew and RAW meaty bones from the butchers. He is old enough to be taken for reasonably long walks. Hopefully he is not left alone during the day, if you do this he will be bored, miserable and lonely and he will chew anything to ease his boredom
No. Do you know why? Because he doesn't know the difference between and old rug and a new one. If you allow this, your dog will end up chewing any and all rugs....new, old, cheap, expensive, etc. The same would apply by letting a dog chew an old shoe. They don't and can't know the difference between an old or new one.
I would say no because your dog doesn't have the slightest idea that it is an old rug. All he knows is that it is fun to chew on. You will be encouraging bad behavior. What happens when you get a new or expensive rug? He wont know the difference and you can't get mad at him for destroying it because he doesn't understand that there is any difference. I would stop him from doing it now.
No they need to learn what they can and can not chew and rugs is a no no. They can't tell new from old and you will just be giving mixtures message and get the poor puppy confused. Also things like rugs are not good for them as they can swallow bits which can cause a blockage and mean major surgery to remove. Which i am sure you don't want.
He's teething really bad so get him a knuckle bone to chew on plus some ice cubes, also a pain killer from the vets. Don't let him chew your rug because it's your home and you need to keep your items safe, spray some Crib Stop on it, it tastes bitter and it's meant for stables because Horses chew the wood, it's really good stuff to use. He will have lots of bits in his poos my GSD passed a bit of a plastic carrier bag, I was to late to stop him chewing the corner of it, after that all bags went into a drawer. Your lovely pup has 42 teeth coming through so bear with him another few weeks and he should be fine. You see the rug as old the pup would not know the difference between it and an Oriental priceless rug our Queen knows that, then again she can afford to smile at her Corgis seeing that we pay for them to live in a Palace.
