Question:

Is reptile substrate good to grow plants in?

I want to keep potted plants in my water dragon‘s enclosure, and I can‘t find any good potting soils to use that don‘t have fertilizers or insecticides in them. I was wondering if I could use coconut fiber substrate to grow my plants in, or should I get a different substrate? I also want to put earthworms into the soil with the plants to improve the plants health (and the it won‘t hurt the water dragon if it eats some of them). Any ideas?

Answer:

I've just moved my plants into my coconut fiber base after removing any vermiculite and they grow fine as long as you water them. The UVB light helps a lot. The problem with the earthworms is that they might dry out if kept in coconut fiber. While it wouldn't be hard to keep it very wet, that also encourages the growth of fungus and bacteria which can infect your animal.
