Question:

Is the damage to my outside central ac unit fixable?

My son just punctured the coil to the outdoor unit with a gig. (he was throwing the gig at a tree like a javelin and it ricocheted into the AC unit.) Air and freon spewed out of it like crazy. Do you think this is fixable. If not, what am I looking at to replace it to cool an 1800 square ft home. It was a Payne.

Answer:

oh first off is your son out of the hospital yet?/ ha ha . the coil can not be repaired, it can be replaced and Payne thinks their coils are really good so 1.3K total repair. replacement? How old is the indoor unit ? more than 8 or 9 replace the whole system if you get a high efficiency like 16 seer you can get a rebate from USA govt. 1800 sq should be a 3.5 or 4 ton depending on your house. A 4 ton condenser out door only 2.9k A 4 ton system , 16 seer, R-410a refrigerant, heat pump 7.6k These are Tempstar prices a medium quality unit.a Buick, for the Trane or Payne expect 2k more.
Yes, it's fixable, but you may want to get some quotes on the repair and see how that prices up to a new unit install. I'm sure the repair would be cheaper, but by how much?
