Question:

Is there a form of Nitinol wire that returns to its original shape after being exposed to a magnetic field?

Is there a form of Nitinol wire that returns to its original shape after being exposed to a magnetic field, instead of heat?I remember hearing about this form of magnetic-responsive wire before, but im not sure if it actually exists, or if it does, where it could be purchased. Thanks for the help.

Answer:

There are magnetostrictive materials, materials which change shape (or volume) under the influence of a magnetic field. The amount and complexity of the strain produced by these transformation is more limited than for Nitinol and similar shape memory alloys (at least it is more limited based on today's technology). google magnetostriction
