Question:

Is there a way to bleach/dye carpet?

Say my carpet is white and I would like to make it.... red. Can it be done? Does anyone know where I can find such a product.I called the Home Depot and some rude black chick said I should clean it. After I told her the carpet is not in need of cleaning, but maybe a change in color, I reminded her that we put someone on the moon, and built a bunch of pyramids, she still had nothing for me.If not products, ideas? Home remedies?I would appreciate it.

Answer:

This is a maybe, maybe not answer. Any carpet with stain protection is very very hard to change the color of. If you have a low price builder grade carpet it will be easier to dye. The better quality carpet will be harder to change the color of. The stain protector will prevent the dye from getting into the fiber. After all, a stain is just a carpet dyed the wrong color. To dye a stain protected carpet the carpet must be over 150 degrees hot, hard to do in a home. You will need to call several carpet dyers to get a real answer. Its expensive almost as much as getting a new carpet. Be sure to check the warranties they have. Dyed carpet colors can track off to adjoining floors and home dyed carpets tend to fade fast.
Yes, carpet can be bleached and dyed. I managed an apartment complex in Houston and we would have carpet dyed if a tenant stained the carpet beyond cleaning. Contact a carpet cleaning company and if they can't do it, they should be able to recommend someone that can.
Don't bleach it. I tried that on a very light carpet once and it did not even come close to matching the rest of the carpet. And if you were going to do the entire carpet, I think the fumes could be toxic. I have heard of dying it though so I know it is possible.
It CAN be done, yes. However, I don't think this is a DIY project. There are companies that can do this. I have no idea what's involved or what it will cost, though. From white to red is a big change ... and keep in mind that red, whether on hair or walls or fabric, is THE hardest color to achieve, the most likely to fade, and the least likely to turn out the way you intended! (How do you feel about pink carpet?) I honestly don't know how you'd find a company that would specialize in carpet-dyeing ... perhaps call a store in your area that sells and installs carpet, and ask who they recommend for color services.
