I have replaced the multi-turn valve from my cold water line to our washing machine only to find a water leak on the inlet side of the new valve. Using a pipe and a crescent wrench, I have tightened the nut on inlet side very snug after tapeing the threads with teflon tape. Still there is enough seepage to dampen a small towel, wrapped around the pipe, in a 12 hour period. The valve is new, but I retained the old compression ring and nut because it was difficult to remove. I didn‘t want to cut the copper pipe because there is not much run-out from the drywall.

Answer:

SPF stands for sun protection factor. The number tells you how long you can safely stay in the sun before reapplying sunscreen. The higher the number the better.
You used the teflon tape in the wrong place. Wind it on each side of the compression ring, and refit. Don't bother taping the thread. Your leak will stop providing you haven't cracked the pipe behind the ring. Don't go on trying to tighten the nut, or you will crack it also. I am assuming it's a brass ring, if it's nylon, cut it off and get a new one. Brass ones will leave a reduced diameter on the copper pipe if it is annealed, but it may be possible to carefully cut it nearly right through, then use a screwdriver to split it free. This may only work with a new ring if the copper is hard for the reason above. Be careful not to damage the tube cutting the ring. Be certain the copper is not already cracked at the ring, also. You may have already done yourself a dis- service trying to overtighten the nut.
I must sympathise with you. Plumbing is a real pain. I have tried to remove these before but I think maybe even if you did get them off you would find the reason for the leak is that the copper under the ring has yielded and distorted - so a new one would not help. Suggest you take the bull by the horns and put some more pipe in.
The compression ring once you tighten it deforms the copper pipe and itself, you may be able to cut the ring with a small abrasive disk but it won't do any good for you have to cut any way the deformed part for it won't let introduce the new compression ring. Try to wrap teflon tape around the thread, to create a packing, if this does not stop the leak, then you have to cut.
