Question:

is there any work done in a heat exchanger?

I just want to know if there is a work done in a heat exchanger?.

Answer:

in heat exchanger only heat transfer from hot body / fluid to cold body / fluid takes place. but to circulate this fluid some work is done on the fluid with pumps. In Thermodynamics point of view work said to be done if sole effect can be converted in to raising of a weight. In heat exchanger if forced convection is taking place, we can keep a wheel in the path of fluid and weight can be raised. Hence we can sy work is done which is nit possible in natural convection systems.
If you look at the heat transfer process, you will see that work has to be done to move the fluids over the heat transfer surfaces. You will also see in the case of convection type heat exchangers this work is caused by the heating or cooling of the fluid. In the first case, the work is not done by the exchanger but by an outside source and in the second case the exchanger does the work.
