Question:

Is this pendant quartz?

I bought this pendant at a gift shop for one of those underground caverns. It was cheep ($7.00), and has varying levels of translucency. Some small spots are kind of translucent while others are completely opaque. It also has an off-white color. I think that it is quartz but cannot find any proof to back up this statement. Thanks.

Answer:

Quartz is harder than Gold. Quartz has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and a density of 2.65 g/cm?. On Mohs Scale of Hardness, gold has a hardness rating of 2.5-3.
Definitely quartz; gold is malleable (you can change its shape by hammering it)
quartz. gold is a very soft metal
Quartz
Hi Kxria, Quartz is harder than Gold. It is #7 on the hardness scale (Moh's mineral hardness scale: 1. Talc, 2. Gypsum, 3. Calcite, 4. Fluorite, 5. Apatite, 6. Orthoclase, 7. Quartz, 8. Topaz, 9. Corundum, 10. Diamond). Since Gold is a relatively soft mineral (2.5), it's hardness would fall between Gypsum Calcite.
