Question:

Is this sentence correct in grammar? If not how should I edit it?

They’re given basins with cold water to wash with; one basin per six girls.

Answer:

They are giving one basin per six girls with cold water to wash in.
Well I can tell you of the bat I am definitely not a grammar expert mainly because I am only a 7th grader but I shall try. I can tell there is something fishy at the end where you say they’re given basins with cold water to wash with... it is in passive form which makes it sound fishy and I don't think it is correct to put a ; before one basin per six girls. Plus when it says wash their hands, what are they washing, hands?themselves? I would rewrite the sentence to &Every six girls was given one basin that had cold water to wash (either put their hands or themselves with&
It is not correct. There must be a complete sentence on both sides of a semi-colon. Just replace the semi-colon with a colon. They're given basins with cold water to wash with: one basin per six girls.
They're given basins with cold water to wash with; one basin per six girls. i think its right...maybe the semi colon should be a colon
Well ... it's not something I hear every day, but it looks all right. The only changes I would make might be a dash instead of semi colon, to say six girls to a basin, and to emphasize that the water is cold rather than warm (which is what most of us use to wash with) by saying 'only' in front of cold water ... &They're given basins with only cold water to wash with - six girls to a basin.& Best of luck !
