Question:

Is Tivo a separate monthly bill or would I get it through my cable company?

I'm about to move into an apartment that already has cable set up, but I want the ability to record shows. Since my cable bill isn't MINE, it's my landlord's, I can't alter my service there to add a DVR, but I was wondering if Tivo was a viable option? Is that something I buy from the store and then pay monthly to use Tivo, or is that something I'd have to do through the cable company?

Answer:

well that's a yes you can use it and no your cant use it-in order for all the features to work you have to pay for a subscription to the EPG -(electronic program guide)so you can set it up to record what ever programs you like to watch.while your at home or asleep or away, now saying this you can use it as record now features only if your watching the programs can you record and stop the recording while you are watching tv-sub to the EPG is usually 15.00 a month but their is comp based tv tuners usb types they are cheaper than most dvr anyways and they get their epg from the net no sub payments monthly.and you can set the usb remote to control your cable box if you have one and its just like the tivo machine but better since no 15$ a month and you can make recording space(hard drive) bigger if you like With little or no experience just connect a External hdd to it-they even have HD usb tuners for little than 100.00

bypass with the Tivo till you pick an HD-DVR participant. The Tivo S3 helps HD yet is very high priced and for the lifetime this is probable extra decrease priced just to lease the cable corporation's version. even nonetheless, Tivo does have extra advantageous factors and that they are particularly uncomplicated to hack. i've got no longer considered S3 hacks yet, yet S2 hacks are abundant. this suggests you may upload further stressful drives (value effectively) or replace it for an greater HD. I positioned a 300GB HD in mine which initially got here with a 40GB. It has some hacks that permit you to do particular purposes too (i.e. FTP transfers, and so on). i admire my Tivo. It has particularly some beneficial factors that cable corporation's have not got like cyber web scheduling, Tivo2Go, checking Yahoo! climate, and so on. The interface seems extra appropriate too.

The tivo subscription is through tivo and not through the cable/content provider. You won't have to worry about the cable company unless you planned on getting digital channels. That would require cable cards.

Your best solution is to talk to your landlord and see if they're willing switch you to the DVR from what you've got now (if you pay the extra). It shouldn't raise their cable bill by more than $10 to $12 per month. That'll give you the advantage of recording one show while watching another. The other benefit is it'll just be added to your rent and be one less payment that you'll have to deal with.

If you are living in a legal apartment, there will be no problem subscribing to your own digital services, and fact you have to, if you want them.
