Question:

Keyboard or digital piano?

I am going to take keyboard lessons soon and need to procure an instrument. I went to a lot of places but I'm not sure what the difference is between digital pianos and keyboards. Can I learn how to play the keyboard on a digital piano or should I just get a keyboard?

Answer:

ok, if your going to get a keyboard then try to get one of the ones that has the same weight on the keys as a real piano! personally i suggest getting a clavinova or somethin like dat! i have a digital yamaha and it feels the same as a real piano! sooo thats really the simplest way to say it!:)
What sort of music do you wish to play? If you want to learn the piano and play classical music then you will need weighted keys and they only come on full size 88 note keyboards.
If you are thinking about playing the piano as a hobby and for enjoyment only, I would get a digital piano with weighted keys; the keys are almost identical to a real piano's, but the sound is electronic. With weighted keys, you'll be able to better develop touch sensitivity and further grasp the feel for dynamics. The downside of digital pianos is that they are more expensive and not very mobile, yet I would still get this as it would last a lifetime and is of substantially better playing quality than a keyboard. But of course, it depends on the context of your use. On the other hand, if you are thinking about seriously studying and exploring the sound and mechanics of a piano, I would definitely get an acoustic piano. An acoustic piano just has that magical sound, that ringing vibration, that brings the music to life. You can't replace the touch or sound of an acoustic piano with an electric one. I would recommend using an acoustic if you are planning on being classically trained.
A digital piano has the same touch as a piano - i.e. the keys are weighted. This means that if you press a key harder you get a loud sound and vice versa. A keyboard doesn't have weighted action like a digital piano, it would feel rather like an organ to play. As to which you purchase - it depends on what you are wanting to learn. If you wish to learn all the technique required to play a piano then you need a digital piano. If you a just wanting to learn to read music and play for enjoyment then a keyboard might be all you need. Generally these days there isn't that much difference in the prices - if it was me I'd go for a digital piano.
