Question:

Khaki sofa + beige carpet = blah?

After weeks of looking I found the PERFECT sofa today. But I'm afraid it matches my carpet too closely. No other colors are available and I really love this sofa. The sofa is khaki and carpet is beige. Walls are white and can't be painted and my furniture is dark wood.Any ideas on how to make this work and what colors might work for throw pillows and curtains? As it stands the combination looks very bland to me.Sorry if this is an easy question. I'm a guy who is not very good at this but I want to learn. Thanks,Pete

Answer:

Light wood and beige are both neutrals, so you could toss any color you wanted into the room, but I would advise (like some of the others here) that you do not paint the walls all a very dark color unless you like feeling like you're in a dungeon. I personally like a garnet color, but that's me. There's a possibility, that you could use a slightly darker than beige color for most of the walls, and then the wall that you want to focus on more, such as the one with the window, paint it your darker color. I did something similer in my old bedroom. Grey walls except for one dark peacock teal colored wall. It was striking. Then you can accent with dark purple bed coverings, or if you decide to paint a different wall than the one with the window, match the curtains with the paint. Also, a small dark purple throw rug on the carpet can add some color to the room.
Most any dark or bright colors that you like would work with this background. Get throw pillows and curtains in the same color or complementary colors. Navy (or any shade of blue), red, hunters green, bright green, or oranges. It depends on the colors you enjoy most. You can use a single color or mix and match two or three colors that work well together. Have fun! P.S. Another idea. I remember seeing beige walls with a khaki sofa. The guy who lived in the apartment had chosen black and white photos to hang on the walls. He used all black frames (used frames he had picked up and painted with flat paint to match). He had throw pillows that were black and actually had shades that matched the walls.
put a throw blanket on the sofa ... any pop of color will do maybe an interesting print (if there are no prints on the sofa or floor. Design usually works in a three base color ... since you have beige (nuetral) anything goes that you like. With the dark wood I'd go with a dark color perhaps a deep brown or maybe a black and then an accent of green for subtle or maybe a warm sort of red/brick color. If you have table or shelves ... use the color in objects there too ... a vase or bowl, book ends ... or a picture .... this pulls the color around the room.
You could go with a deep red for the accent pillows. Maybe a pattern in reds, golds, brown and off white. You could also use a throw on the sofa in that color. For the drapery you could go with the deep red with maybe a natural shade under the drapes, like bamboo or woven. For a more natural look you could use a pattern pillow in dark greens, tans, browns, and off whites and then a dark green drape with the natural shades. Another great color with Khaki is dark blue. You can add a lot of warmth to a light room by just adding the accent colors. If you love the sofa get it. You will not always have the carpet and walls that you are describing. I actually have off white carpet, off white walls and my sofas are off white leather. The accent furniture is dark wood and to warm the look of the room I have palm tree pillows that are in shades of the green, tan, brown and off white. I have a dark green throw on the one sofa. I also have pictures on the walls with shades of greens, golds, and browns with a touch of light orange the drapes are the dark green with bamboo shades and it is a very warm and inviting room. When you are out looking for things find the colors that most appeal to you. You will then start to see patterns that appeal and so on. Good luck with your room!
Well, I have an all beige living room and dark wood furniture also! I used dark reds, forest greens and golden yellows as accent colors. Buy throw pillows with texture and design, in different colors. I have a solid color throw (green), and I have three dark wood shelves with colored glass bottles in all of the colors I mentioned above, and also grape purple and dark blue. The largest picture in my room also has all the colors I needed to bring it all together. I went with a light sheer curtain to let the light in, and to keep if from looking too down in the space.
