Question:

KLX250s valve clearances?

my mechanic did a valve clearance check and said it was OK and when I asked him about the clearances he said that they were 6 thousands and 9 thousands however in my book the measurements are different they are as follow: ( i don't understand what he meant by thousands)inlet: 0.10~0.140.15~0.19 exhaust: 0.14~0.190.20~0.24so did he just make it up or did he get the wrong measurement.

Answer:

The exhaust valves get hotter--the reason for looser clearances.Buster Brown is right about the rest.
Klx250s Specs
Your guy was quoting clearances in thousandths of an inch: .006 and .009 or 0.15 and 0.23mm The spec in your manual is given in millimeters. Your exhaust valve clearance is at the upper end of the range, right where you want it. The intake is at the low end of the range. Clearances tend to tighten up as the valve seat wears with use. It's not clear to me why your book would have two specs for inlet and two for exhaust. Clearance specs are usually given for a cold engine. Perhaps the tighter spec is for a hot engine. Bean, I'm right about the whole thing. Valve clearances get tighter as the engine warms. They typically get tighter over time. If they get looser, there is some unusual wear going on.
