The answer is embedded within your question. The drivers don't see us. Drivers pretty much see what they are looking for, namely other cars. Something small and non-threatening like a bicycle and its rider gets filtered out as noise. What can we do? Education and 3-foot laws help, but we must also act responsibly. The list of things we should do has been posted on this board many times: 1. Dress in bright, highly observable colors 2. Ride predictably. Be where automobile drivers expect you to be so you won't get filtered out as noise. 3. Obey traffic signs and signals. 4. Make sure everyone around you knows your intentions, even if it is to go straight through an intersection. 5. Maintain situational awareness. Your ears are your most important warning device about things coming up behind you. Don't ride with your ears wired into a music machine. 6. Plan ahead. When you come up to an intersection and there are cars around you, think about what you would do if you were to be left hooked or right crossed. 7. When passing in front of a car stopped at an crossing intersection, give a big Hello! wave with a smile on your face. You don't care if the driver has a nice day. You just want to be noticed. These things have kept me safe riding in traffic for many years. I'm sure I've left some out. HTH
