Question:

Laminate floors installation against metal door threshold?

I am installing laminate floor and there is metal door threshold. The metal door threshold is slightly less thick than the wood, in addition, I dont believe it lifts up. What is the best course of action to put the laminate against this threshold? The wood is perpendicular to the threshold. Thank you

Answer:

Laminate Threshold
Any time a laminate is going up against another material and especially one that is in a fixed position such as a metal threshold, you must leave a gap. This gap can be caulked, a transition pc put in such as a reducer or T mold to cover the gap. Each case is different. Depending on the actual height difference will depend on what you need to do. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar, I ve attended several installation seminars as well as installed a couple 100,000 s/f. GL
You can remove the threshold, there should be screws or nails holding it in place. You can then finish the flooring and reapply the threshold. You may want to see about a different style of threshold, 'edges' vary. You will need to watch the 'height' of the threshold if it changes, the door may not fit. Then you can trim the door bottom slightly (or sand down) with the door off the hinges. If it is a door to the outside you may be able to adjust the door bottom weatherstrip piece to allow for any extra thickness.
