Question:

Little camera on light post?

I ran a red light the other day and I went on google earth and on that intersection there is only a tiny camera above the light post but nothing else. was it a red light camera?

Answer:

check again to see if it wasn't a lightining thingy...thse are usually on top of the lightpost!
As others have said, the cameras are fairly large...it's possible that the Google Earth photo was taken before the cameras were set up.
Traffic cameras are usually a big closed-circuit video camera looking kind of thing accompanied with a huge white box next to it that produces the flash for taking a picture of your license, VIN, etc. If there was a little box thing on top of the light post, that's probably for traffic control. My understanding of it is that there are little boxes on top of lightposts so that when an emergency vehicle approaches the intersection, the box will recognize the flashing lights and change the light to green for them.
The red light cameras are large cameras mounted on their own post on the corners, not on top of a light post. You would notice a bright flash going off if your picture had been taken. It's possible the tiny camera you're talking about is an electronic eye so the light will change when there is traffic waiting at the red light.
