Question:

looking to buy old house but found vermiculite in attic, on floor between joints?

Hi I am in the process of buying a house that has been remodeled- had the inspection and the inspector went to the attic and found vermiculite on the floor.. mixed in with other insulation.. To have an abatement done will be very very costly.. I want to be able to use this attic to store things- what is the best way to do this without health risks? again, I prob wont do the abatement.. any help you can offer would be great!!

Answer:

Pearlite being spherical it should have better strength. Expanded styrofoam pellets are also useful, as is fly ash [hollow tiny glass spheres]
In general concrete relies mainly on the reinforcing steel to develop a lot of its strength. I am not sure there is a great deal of difference between the two when used for strength concrete. Vermiculite seems to be used more its insulating value.
