Question:

Mom caught me spying on my brother and took my phone away, what?

My brother had his girlfriend over to the house, and they were up in his room the entire day. So I was wondering what the heck they were doing all day in there. I went and quietly opened his door a little bit, and well I saw them making out. So than I thought about video taping it with my cell phone just for the fun of it. I stood there for about 20 seconds, they didn't notice me because they were too busy kissing. Than my mom comes by and sees me spying on them and drags me away. She than takes my phone away and deleted my video tape. She said that I can't have my phone back for a week, and after I apologize for invading my brother's privacy. Well I think this is stupid, I was only spying for about 20 seconds. There's no need to take my phone away for a whole week, don't you think? Do you think my mom's punishment is fair?

Answer:

Unemployment compensation is ONLY for persons who have the time and ability to work and are not working ONLY because there is no work available to them. If either (a) you cannot work full time for the reasons that you state, or (b) your employer (or former employer) has work available for you that you could do if you had time, then you are not eligible for unemployment compensation. You may qualify for some other government program, but not unemployment compensation. You should not leave your job. Your situation appears to meet the requirements of FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act). If your employer is covered by this federal law (or a similar state law), you are entitled to an unpaid leave of absence (of considerable longer than the two weeks) to care for your mother, and to return to your old job afterward (with certain exceptions).
